Tamworth Football Club, nicknamed “The Lambs,” is a non-league football club based in Tamworth, Staffordshire.
Established in 1970, they currently compete in the Vanarama National League North, which is part of the sixth tier of English football. The team calls The Lamb Ground their home ground.
At the time of writing, Andy Peaks is the current manager with experience at AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Wealdstone and Stamford AFC among his past roles.
History
Tamworth FC, founded in 1933 following the dissolution of Tamworth Castle FC, has experienced varied fortunes in English non-league football. Initially competing in the Birmingham Combination, they later joined the Birmingham League in the 1950s. The 1960s marked a successful era with league titles and cup victories, including progress in the FA Cup.
However, the 1970s saw a decline, culminating in financial troubles and a deteriorating stadium. A revival began in 1984 under a new consortium, leading to a return to the Southern League and a memorable FA Vase victory at Wembley in 1989.
The 1990s and early 2000s witnessed fluctuating fortunes, with managerial changes and challenges in league performance. Gary Mills’ arrival in 2001 briefly revitalized the club, culminating in Southern League success in 2003. Subsequent years featured notable FA Cup runs, but inconsistent league results led to managerial changes and relegation threats.
The introduction of a 3G pitch in 2016 marked a significant infrastructure upgrade, benefiting both the club and the community. Despite this, the team faced relegation and managerial instability. Recent years have seen a mix of success and challenges, including a strong performance disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and further managerial changes, with Andy Peaks appointed to stabilize the club.
