Berkhamsted Football Club, nicknamed “The Comrades,” is a non-league football club based in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.
Established in 1970, they currently compete in the Pitching In Southern Football League Premier Central, which is part of the seventh tier of English football. The team calls Broadwater their home ground.
At the time of writing, Steve Heath is the current manager with experience at AFC Dunstable, Kings Langley and Leverstock Green among his past roles.
History
Berkhamsted Football Club, nicknamed the Comrades, was formed in 2009, continuing the legacy of the original Berkhamsted Comrades formed by returning servicemen from World War I. Under the guidance of experienced manager Micky Vipond, the club quickly ascended the ranks of non-league football. Their inaugural season in the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Division 2 ended with a title win, leading to promotion to Division 1. The following season, they continued their success, winning the division and earning promotion to the Premier Division, where they remained for six years. The club’s exceptional performance in one season led to the receipt of the Sir Stanley Rous Memorial Trophy from the Herts. FA.
The club’s journey in national competitions has been noteworthy. They made their FA Cup debut in 2011, reaching their furthest in the competition during a recent season. In the FA Trophy, they’ve had mixed success, with their best run coming in the 2020-1 season. The FA Vase saw them reach the last 16 in 2016. Locally, Berkhamsted has been successful in various cup competitions, including winning the Herts Senior Cup and the Premier Division Cup.
The club has experienced management changes, with Steve Bateman and Lee Bircham moving up to manage Hemel Hempstead Town, taking some players with them. Despite challenges, including pandemic-related disruptions, Berkhamsted has clinched titles and promotions, most recently anticipating a move up to step 3. The club also actively participates in youth development, fielding teams in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League and the Eastern Junior Alliance.
