Gateshead Football Club, nicknamed “The Tynesiders,” is a non-league football club based in Gateshead, Durham.
Established in 1970, they currently compete in the Vanarama National League, which is part of the fifth tier of English football. The team calls Gateshead International Stadium their home ground.
At the time of writing, Rob Elliott is the current manager with experience at Bishop's Stortford among his past roles.
History
Gateshead FC’s history is marked by notable achievements and challenges. Originally formed in 1930 as Gateshead AFC, the club narrowly missed promotion to the Second Division in its early years and experienced a memorable FA Cup run in 1953. However, in 1960, they were controversially voted out of the Football League. After various league changes and a brief cessation in 1973, Gateshead FC reformed in 1977, achieving success in the Northern Premier League and the Conference.
Financial difficulties threatened the club’s existence in the early 2000s, but under Graham Wood’s ownership since 2006, Gateshead saw a revival, securing back-to-back promotions and returning to the Conference Premier. The club faced off-pitch challenges and ownership changes in the late 2010s but achieved a significant milestone by winning the Vanarama National League North in the 2021/22 season under Mike Williamson, marking a return to the National League.
