Biography

Kevin Maher, a former player with a significant history at Southend United, returned to the club as Head Coach in October 2021. During his playing career at Southend, Maher made over 450 appearances and captained the team to two promotions. He began his career at Tottenham Hotspur’s Academy, joining Southend in 1998. After initially struggling to find his footing, he became a key player, contributing significantly to the club’s success, including reaching the Football League Trophy finals twice and winning the League Two Play-Off final.

Maher’s playing career also included stints at Gillingham, Oldham Athletic, Dagenham & Redbridge, Bray Wanderers, Whitehawk, and Chelmsford City.

Maher transitioned into coaching after his playing days, starting with managing Chelmsford City and then moving to the club’s U23 side. His coaching journey led him to Bristol Rovers, where he worked with four different managers. This experience paved the way for his return to Southend United, where he was appointed Head Coach. This role marked a significant homecoming for Maher, bringing him back to a club where he had significant history and past successes as a player.

As of December 23, 2023, Maher’s record as Head Coach of Southend United stands at 48 wins out of 112 games. His tenure marks a new chapter in his long association with the club, transitioning from a successful player to a guiding force in a coaching capacity, aiming to replicate his on-field successes in a managerial role.
