Scunthorpe United Football Club, nicknamed “The Iron,” is a non-league football club based in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

Established in 1899, they currently compete in the Enterprise National League, which is part of the fifth tier of English football. The team calls The Attis Arena their home ground.

After merging with North Lindsey United in 1910, the club joined the Midland League in 1912, winning the competition in 1926–27 and 1938–39. Admission to the Football League came with the 1950 expansion. Champions of Third Division North in 1957–58, they spent six seasons in the Second Division, peaking at fourth place in 1961–62 before relegation in 1964.

Scunthorpe United oscillated between the third and fourth tiers for two decades, with promotions in 1972 and 1983 cancelled by swift returns and a bottom-place finish in 1975. A move to Glanford Park in 1988 preceded repeated play-off defeats until Brian Laws arrived in 1997. Under Laws and later Nigel Adkins, the Iron earned four promotions, twice reached the Championship and set a 16-match unbeaten run in 2006–07.

Relegated from the Championship in 2011, Scunthorpe dropped to League Two in 2013 and exited the Football League in April 2022 after 72 years. Ownership turmoil followed: Peter Swann resigned, David Hilton’s brief spell brought unpaid wages and a fans’ bailout, and Michelle Harness completed a takeover in October 2023. The club finished second in 2024–25 and beat Chester in the play-off final to secure a return to the National League.
