The Bluebirds

Barrow Association Football Club, nicknamed “The Bluebirds,”is a non-league football club based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

Established in 1901, they currently compete in theEnterprise National League, which is part of the fifth tier of English football. The team calls The SO Legal Stadium their home ground.

After beginning in the Lancashire League and playing at several grounds before settling at Holker Street in the early 1900s, the club achieved promotion to the Lancashire Combination’s top division and established itself in regional football. Competitive progress was interrupted by the First World War, but after resuming play the club won the Lancashire Combination and gained election to the Football League’s Third Division North. For much of the inter-war and post-war periods, the team competed in the lower divisions of the Football League, recording notable FA Cup ties and setting club records, including a 12–1 league victory and several large attendances at Holker Street.

The club remained in the Football League until 1972, when it lost its place after a re-election ballot and entered non-league football. The following decades brought mixed fortunes, including promotions, relegations and financial challenges, but also significant successes. These included winning the Northern Premier League title, reaching the FA Trophy semi-finals, and lifting the FA Trophy at Wembley in 1990. Further league titles followed during the 1990s and 2000s, although financial difficulties led to relegation from the Conference despite avoiding it on the field. Under a succession of managers, the club rebuilt its position through strong cup runs and improved league performances.

During the late 2000s and 2010s, the club returned to the highest level of non-league football, enjoyed notable FA Cup campaigns against Premier League and Football League opposition, and won the FA Trophy for a second time in 2010. Following ownership changes and renewed investment, the club secured promotion from Conference North and later established itself in the National League. Under Ian Evatt, it was declared National League champion in 2020 and returned to the Football League after an absence of more than 48 years. The subsequent six-season spell in the EFL included two top-half finishes and infrastructure improvements at Holker Street, including the construction of two new stands. Relegation at the end of the 2025–26 season returned the club to the National League.
