Steyning Town Community Football Club,nicknamed “The Barrowmen,”is a non-league football club based in Steyning, West Sussex.
Established in 1892, they currently compete in thePitching In Isthmian League South East Division, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls Peter Humphreys Memorial Ground their home ground.
The club spent its early years in local Sussex football, becoming a founder member of the West Sussex Football League before later competing in the Brighton, Hove & District Football League. Across the first half of the twentieth century it experienced promotion, relegation and divisional success, including Division Two championship-winning campaigns in the 1930s. Following the Second World War, the club continued in the Brighton & Hove league and eventually earned promotion into the Sussex County League during the 1960s.
After establishing itself in the Sussex County League, the club won the Division Two title in the late 1970s to reach the top division. It adopted its current name in 1979 and made its FA Cup debut soon afterwards. The 1980s brought some of the club’s most successful seasons, including two Sussex County League Division One titles, a run to the FA Vase quarter-finals, victories in the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup and several league cup successes. The club later became a founder member of the Wessex League, spent a period in the Combined Counties League, and then returned to the Sussex County League, where it experienced both relegation and promotion during the following decades.
In 2013, the club merged with Steyning Strikers to form a larger community-based organisation. A new 3G pitch was opened at the Shooting Field in 2015 following significant investment, and the club received Sussex FA Community Club of the Year awards in 2016 and 2017. Recent years have included promotion to the Southern Combination League Premier Division, the formation of a women’s team, and league and cup success for both the women’s and men’s senior sides. The men’s team won the Southern Combination League Premier Division and Peter Bentley Cup in 2023–24 to secure promotion to the Isthmian League, before returning to the Southern Combination League Premier Division. The club now operates a large number of senior, youth and girls’ teams and has more than 450 registered players.
