The Tangerines

Wellington Association Football Club, nicknamed “The Tangerines,” is a non-league football club based in Wellington, Somerset.

Established in 1896, they currently compete in the Jewson Western League Premier Division, which is part of the ninth tier of English football. The team calls The Playing Field their home ground.

The club began its football journey in local leagues around Taunton and Tiverton before stepping up to the Somerset Senior League in the early 1960s. Western League status was achieved in 1978, and it has been maintained ever since, giving the side one of the longest continuous runs at this level. They have had spells in the Premier Division during the early 1980s and again between 2008 and 2011, before earning promotion back to the top division in 2016–17 as First Division champions.

Following that promotion, the team consolidated their place in the Premier Division, with highlights including a semi-final appearance in the Somerset Premier Cup. More recently, they recorded a mid-table finish in the 2022–23 season under the management of Richard Cherry, supported by long-serving player Jack Bown-Porter. Alongside the first team, the club operates several senior sides, including a reserve team in the Devon and Exeter League, an A team in the Taunton Saturday League, and two women’s teams competing in the Somerset County Women’s League.

The club has expanded into a large community organisation, fielding 22 youth and mini teams for boys and girls from the age of seven upwards, as well as running coaching for younger children. A disability section also provides football for two adult and two youth sides. Beyond the pitch, the club is a hub for local activity, hosting skittles and darts teams and making its facilities available for community groups, charities, and social events throughout the year.
