Shepton Mallet Football Club, nicknamed “The Mallet,” is a non-league football club based in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
Established in 1986, they currently compete in the Jewson Western League Premier Division, which is part of the ninth tier of English football. The team calls The Playing Fields their home ground.
Following the demise of Shepton Mallet Town, the newly formed club began life in the Somerset Senior League Division Two, taking the place of the former club’s reserve side and continuing to use the West Shepton ground. Progress was steady, with promotion to the Premier Division of the County League by the end of the 1980s. They remained at that level until the early 2000s, when a league title secured promotion to the Western League, where they have competed ever since.
The club’s early involvement in national competitions was limited, but over time they began to enjoy more success. In the FA Vase, they reached the third round proper for the first time in the 2014–15 season, while in the FA Cup they have regularly progressed through several rounds in recent years. Their record in these tournaments has gradually improved, with consistent runs highlighting their progress beyond local league competition.
The late 2010s and 2020s brought notable developments. In 2019–20, they were challenging for their highest league finish before the season was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the management of Aaron Seviour and Matt Morris, the 2023–24 campaign saw them finish seventh in the Western League Premier Division with a club record points-per-game ratio. That season also delivered their first silverware at Step 5 level, lifting the Les Phillips Cup with victory over Barnstaple Town.
