The Swags

Nailsea and Tickenham Football Club, nicknamed “The Swags,” is a non-league football club based in Nailsea, Bristol.

Established in 2015, they currently compete in the Jewson Western League Premier Division, which is part of the ninth tier of English football. The team calls The JLC Ground their home ground.

Formed in 2015 following a merger between Nailsea Town and Tickenham United, bringing together two clubs with their own distinct histories. The decision to unite was taken after discussions involving officials, players and local leagues, with the aim of creating a stronger and more sustainable side for the community. The new club has sought to build on the heritage of both predecessors while looking to develop further both on and off the field.

Nailsea Town’s history can be traced through its rapid progress from the Weston-super-Mare and District League into the Somerset County League from the late 1980s. A run of consecutive promotions saw the side reach the Premier Division, and the club later enjoyed further success in county competitions, winning league titles and cups. Its Fryth Way ground was established with the help of founding members Rex and Toby Baker, and over the years the club attracted well-known players including former Bristol City professionals. Nailsea Town also emphasised developing local football by drawing in young talent and support from nearby businesses.

Tickenham United initially played during the 1960s and 1970s before merging with Clevedon Sports in 1973. The club was later re-established in 2007 and quickly rose through the divisions of the Weston-super-Mare and District League, claiming multiple promotions and cup wins. Known for its strong community presence, the club organised fundraising events that included appearances from Bristol City figures Scott Murray and Louis Carey. Despite on-field progress, the lack of a permanent home ground prevented further promotion, and this limitation played a major role in the decision to merge with Nailsea Town to secure a more stable future.
