The Moatmen

Gresley Rovers Football Club, nicknamed “The Moatmen,” is a non-league football club based in Church Gresley, Derbyshire.

Established in 1882, they currently compete in the GCE Hire Fleet Ltd. UCL Premier Division North, which is part of the ninth tier of English football. The team calls Moat Ground their home ground.

Beginning in the mining village of Church Gresley, the original club first played friendlies and cup games before joining the Burton Junior League for the 1892/93 season. A league title was secured in the 1894/95 season. The club later joined the Midland League for the 1903/04 season, though financial difficulties eventually forced a return to local competition.

After moving to the Moat Ground, the club progressed through various leagues, notably joining the powerful Birmingham Combination in 1925. Despite reaching the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup in 1930/31, financial issues led to a move to the Central Alliance in 1933. Success followed in the Leicestershire Senior League, winning titles in 1946/7 and 1947/8.

The club dominated the East Midlands Regional League between 1961 and 1975, winning the title on four occasions. A highly memorable season came in 1990/91, when the club reached the F.A. Vase final at Wembley. Following relegation in 1998/99, the club liquidated at the end of the 2008–09 season, leading to the formation of Gresley FC.

The club returned to the Gresley Rovers name in the summer of 2020.
