The Green Lions

Guernsey Football Club, nicknamed “The Green Lions,” is a non-league football club based in St Peter Port, Guernsey.

Established in 2011, they currently compete in the Premier Sports Southern Combination Premier Division, which is part of the ninth tier of English football. The team calls Footes Lane their home ground.

Following a successful run in the FA National League System Cup in 2010, the initial idea to establish the club was developed. This success culminated in the club representing England in the UEFA Regions Cup preliminary round in 2010. The founding directors received encouragement from several bodies, leading to member clubs voting for Guernsey FC to join the Combined Counties League in 2011.

The club’s first season saw them win the league title, achieving a double by winning the Combined Counties Premier Challenge Cup. The following season saw the Green Lions reach the semi-finals of the FA Carlsberg Vase, with a crowd of 4,290 attending the semi-final first leg. They secured promotion to the Ryman Isthmian League Division One South.

The club became the first team from the Channel Islands to play in the FA Cup during the 2013/14 season. After a difficult second season in the Ryman South, the Green Lions found themselves third in the table during the 2015-16 season. The 2016-17 season was marked by the FA Cup coming to Guernsey for the first time, although the team ultimately exited in penalties.

The club secured its place in the Isthmian League South East Division in 2018-19 with a draw in the final minute of the season. After a curtailed season due to the pandemic, the club was reinstated for the 2021-22 season. In 2022-23, the team fought against relegation, eventually securing safety with three matches to spare.
