The Citizens

Darlaston Town (1874) Football Club, nicknamed “The Citizens,” is a non-league football club based in Walsall, Staffordshire.

Established in 2014, they currently compete in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Division One West, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls The Paycare Stadium their home ground.

First noted in league competition in 1893, the club drew a 7,000 crowd for a 3-1 win over Wednesbury Old Athletic in 1899 before settling at the City Ground the following year. It lifted the Birmingham County Junior Cup in 1898, the Birmingham Junior League in 1908 and the Birmingham Combination in 1911 and 1938, added another Combination title in 1946 and produced future Nottingham Forest captain Jack Burkitt.

Founder members of the West Midlands Regional League in 1962, the side stayed in its Premier Division until ground issues led to relegation in 1982; the Division One crown of 1990 brought a return and back-to-back Birmingham County FA Vase wins. A 2007 league title preceded financial collapse in 2013, but a phoenix club was admitted to WMRL Division Two, gained instant promotion, moved to the Paycare Ground and built thriving youth and women’s sections, the latter winning back-to-back promotions and the Covid Cup.

After a 2021 restructure the club entered Midland League Division One, ended 2022 as runners-up and play-off winners to reach Step 5, placed fourth the next season, then earned Step 4 promotion via 2024 play-offs. Six FA Cup winners, two England and one Wales international and 44 future and 72 former League players have appeared.
