The Villagers

North Ferriby Football Club, nicknamed “The Villagers,” is a non-league football club based in North Ferriby, East Riding of Yorkshire.

Established in 2019, they currently compete in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Division One East, which is part of the eighth tier of English football. The team calls The Versa Sportswear Stadium their home ground.

Founded in the years following the First World War, the club’s earliest recorded competitive appearance came on 6 November 1919, in the East Riding Intermediate Cup. A key figure in those formative years was J V Knowles, chief cashier at Barclays Bank in Hull and prominent village figure, who helped steer the club through its early development.

By 1934 the club had reformed as North Ferriby United, winning the East Riding Church League Cup in their inaugural season. Further trophies followed swiftly, and the 1947–48 season brought what remains the club’s record victory, a 22–0 win over Brighams. The 1949–50 campaign saw them become the first East Riding club to reach the first round proper of the FA Amateur Cup.

Promotion to the Yorkshire League came in 1970–71, the same season the first team won the East Riding Senior Cup and Division 2 title. The club reached the FA Vase final in 1996–97, losing to Whitby Town at Wembley, before winning the FA Trophy in 2014–15, coming from 2–0 down to defeat Wrexham on penalties. Promotion to the National League followed in 2015–16.

Financial mismanagement led to the club being wound up in March 2019, but it reformed almost immediately. Back-to-back promotions in 2021–22 and 2022–23 restored considerable momentum, the latter title won by fourteen points.
