Sutton United Football Club, nicknamed “The U's,” is a non-league football club based in Sutton, Sutton.
Established in 1898, they currently compete in the Enterprise National League, which is part of the fifth tier of English football. The team calls VBS Community Stadium their home ground.
The club grew from a merger of Sutton Association and Guild Rovers, adopting amber colours and collecting three Herald Junior Cups from 1902. Senior status in 1910 preceded a move to Gander Green Lane, and election to the Athenian League produced Surrey Senior Shield wins, a first title in 1928 and two Amateur Cup semi-finals before World War Two.
Post-war highlights included the 1946 Athenian crown, Isthmian titles in 1967, 1985 and 1986, and the 1979 Anglo-Italian Semi-Pro triumph. Wembley visits came in Amateur Cup finals of 1963 and 1969 and the 1981 FA Trophy. FA Cup fame arrived with a 1970 tie against Leeds and the 1989 victory over Coventry, before Conference relegation in 1991.
A 1999 promotion preceded admission to Conference South in 2004. Paul Doswell delivered the 2011 Isthmian and 2016 National League South titles and a 2017 FA Cup tie with Arsenal. National League champions in 2021, the team finished eighth in League Two and lost the 2022 Papa Johns Trophy final. Relegated in 2024 under Steve Morison, they ended their return season mid-table and reached the National League Cup final. Gander Green Lane has been upgraded, reverting to grass and hosting Crystal Palace Women.
