Billericay Town Football Club, nicknamed “The Blues,” is a non-league football club based in Billericay, Essex.
Established in 1970, they currently compete in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, which is part of the seventh tier of English football. The team calls New Lodge their home ground.
At the time of writing, Gary McCann is the current manager with experience at Hampton & Richmond Borough and Hendon among his past roles.
History
Billericay Town Football Club, founded in 1880, has a storied history in non-league football. Starting in the Romford & District League in 1890, the club won several early titles in the Mid-Essex League. The 1960s and 70s marked a golden era, with the club founding the Essex Olympian League and achieving multiple league wins and FA Vase triumphs, including memorable victories at Wembley. They continued to climb through various leagues, experiencing both promotions and relegations.
The 1980s to early 2000s were marked by fluctuating fortunes, with the club often moving between divisions and making several FA Cup appearances. The 2010s saw a resurgence, highlighted by promotions and cup successes, particularly after Glenn Tamplin’s takeover in 2016, which brought high-profile signings and renewed achievements. However, the club faced relegation again in the 2021-22 season.
The club’s home ground, New Lodge, has evolved significantly since 1970. From basic facilities, it transformed through various renovations and expansions, culminating in a major redevelopment in 2017. This uplifted the ground’s capacity to around 5,000, reflecting the club’s ambition and growth in the non-league football landscape.
