Abingdon United

United

Abingdon United Football Club, nicknamed “United,” is a non-league football club based in Abingdon, Oxon.

Established in 1946, they currently compete in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Premier Division North, which is part of the ninth tier of English football. The team calls The Northcourt their home ground.

A group of ex-servicemen launched a second football presence in Abingdon, entering Division One of the North Berks League where an early relegation was offset by immediate success in the Charity Shield. League titles in 1953–54 preceded a switch to the Hellenic League, and by 1965–66 the side had lifted the Division One Challenge Cup.

Abingdon United reached the Hellenic Premier Division in 1976–77, slipped back for one year, then remained for 24 seasons. Senior status in 1985 allowed entry to national cups, and in 1996–97 the club lifted the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy and Hellenic Floodlit Cup, finished league runners-up, and installed floodlights and extra seating.

Another county trophy followed in 1997–98. Promotion to the Southern League came in 2006–07, but financial pressures prompted a voluntary return to the Hellenic Premier Division for 2013–14. Abingdon United now plays in Combined Counties Premier Division North, holding honours such as the 2001–02 Hungerford Cup, 2011–12 Jim Newman Memorial Cup and 2020–21 Supplementary Cup, and has twice reached the FA Cup second qualifying round and the FA Vase third round.
