Guiseley Association Football Club, nicknamed “The Lions,” is a non-league football club based in Guiseley, West Yorkshire.
Established in 1970, they currently compete in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division, which is part of the seventh tier of English football. The team calls Nethermoor Park their home ground.
At the time of writing, Andy Welsh is the current manager with experience at Farsley Celtic among his past roles.
History
Founded in 1909, Guiseley AFC experienced early success in local leagues, with significant achievements in the 1930s, including three league championships and reaching the FA Amateur Cup’s last 16 twice. The 1960s were marked by dominance in the Wharfedale Challenge Cup. Entering the Yorkshire League in 1968, the club won the Division Two championship in 1976 and enjoyed cup successes in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The 1980s and 1990s saw Guiseley AFC in the Northern Counties East League and the Northern Premier League, highlighted by an FA Vase victory and a league and cup double in the 1989-90 season. The club reached the FA Cup’s First Round Proper in 1991 but faced challenges in the late 1990s, leading to a brief relegation in the early 2000s. The 21st century marked a period of rebuilding, culminating in promotion to the Blue Square North division in the club’s centenary year, 2009-10.
Despite fluctuations in performance and management changes, Guiseley AFC continued to compete effectively, with notable runs in the FA Cup and play-offs.
The club’s women’s team, Guiseley Vixens, also enjoyed success before folding in 2019. Guiseley AFC currently plays in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
